 Western Nebraska Community College’s Francisco Cruz came up big for the Cougars last week, scoring 93 points in three games in leading the Cougars to two wins. For his efforts, Cruz has been named the NJCAA Men’s Division I basketball player of the week for games ending Jan. 31.

WNCC Francisco Cruz vino en plan grande para los Cougars la semana pasada, anotando 93 puntos en tres juegos para llevar a los Cougars a dos triunfos. Por sus esfuerzos , Cruz ha sido nombrado el NJCAA División I Varonil Jugador de la Semana para juegos terminados hasta el 31 de Febrero.

Cruz, a 6-4 wing from Nogales, Mexico, averaged 31 points and seven rebounds a game for the Cougars last week, while ringing in 12 3-pointers and going 23 of 29 from the free throw line.

Cruz, un ala de 6´4 '' ( 1.93 mts) de Nogales , México , promedió 31 puntos y siete rebotes por juego para los Cougars , la semana pasada , mientras lograba 12 tiros de tres puntos y se iba 23 de 29 desde la linea de tiros libres. 

WNCC coach Russ Beck said he is deserving of the honor.

“We are very proud of Francisco. He is a hard worker and deserving of any recognition that comes his way,” he said. “We are excited for what he and the rest of the Cougars have accomplished and we are excited about where this program is heading.”

In an 89-72 win over Eastern Wyoming, Cruz scored 41 points which made him only the 10^th player in school history to score over 40 points in a game. In that same game he was 14-of-19 from the field, 8-of-10 from downtown, and complimented all this with five rebounds, five assists, and one steal.

En un triunfo de 89-72 sobre Eastern Wyoming , Cruz anotó 41 puntos y esto lo llevó a ser el décimo jugador en la historia de la escuela en anotar 40 puntos o más en un juego. En el mismo juego, el tuvo 14 de 19 en tiros de campo, 8 de 10 desde la linea de tres y redondeó todo con cinco rebotes , cinco asistencias  y un robo. 
Two days later, in an 85-83 overtime loss to Northeastern (Colo.) Junior College, Cruz scored 28 points and shot 11-of-12 from the line, all in the second half.

Dos dias mas tarde , en una derrota en tiempo extra de 85-83 con Northeastern ( Colorado) Junior College , Cruz anotó 28 puntos y tiró 11 de 12 de los tiros libres , todos en el segundo tiempo.
In the 74-67 win against Otero Junior College, he scored 24 points while shooting 50 percent from the field (8-of-16). He also shot 7-of-10 from the charity stripe and had eight rebounds and two steals in a game where he never came off the floor.

En la victoria de 74-67 contra Otero Junior College , anotó 24 puntos mientras tiraba para 50 % en tiros de campo ( 8 de 16) . El también tiró 7 de 10 desde los tiros libres y tuvo ocho rebotes y dos robos en un juego dónde nunca salió de la cancha.

For the week, Cruz averaged 31 points per game on 29-of-52 shooting, 12-of-22 from the three-point line, went 23-of-29 from the free throw line, and had 20 rebounds with six assists and three steals.

WNCC, 13-9, will return to action this weekend when they travel to North Platte Community College on Friday and McCook Community College on Saturday for sub-region contests. The Cougars will return to Cougar Palace on Tuesday, Feb. 9 to face Casper College.

En la semana, Cruz promedió 31 puntos por juego con 29 encestes de 52 tiros, 12 de 22 desde los tres puntos, se fué 23 de 29 desde los tiros libres y tuvo 20 rebotes con 6 asistencias y 3 robos .

WNCC , 13-9, regresa a la acción este fin de semana cuando viajan a North Platte Community College , el viernes y al McCook Community College , el sábado , para juegos de la Subregión. . Los Cougars regresarán al Cougar Palace en Febrero 9 para recibir al Casper College.
