WNCC's Cruz verbally committs to become a Wyoming Cowboy

Cruz del WNCC acepta verbalmente convertirse en Vaquero de Wyoming

Western Nebraska Community College’s Francisco “Paco” Cruz spent Saturday watching the University of Wyoming play No. 13 BYU University and dreaming of someday maybe scoring points in the “Arena.”

Saturday’s visit to Laramie, Wyo., for the 6-foot-4 WNCC sophomore was the deciding factor on his college choice as he verbally committed to become a Wyoming Cowboy and help rebuild a Wyoming basketball program. Sunday’s decision brought to an end the season-long bombardment of coaches trying to get his basketball talents for the next two seasons.

La visita del sábado a Laramie , Wyoming , para el guardia de 6'4'' (1.93 mts) fué un factor clave para su elección escolar,  ya que el estaba ya comprometido verbalmente a ser un Cowboy de Wyoming y ayudar a reconstruir su programa de basquetbol. La decisión del domingo llevó a su final  el largo bombardeo de entrenadores, que durante toda la temporada, estuvieron tratando de obtener sus talentos en el basquetbol para las próximas 2 temporadas. 

“I really liked the campus and I really liked the people, players and coaches. I just felt good about it,” Cruz said. “It is a good place where I am going to play and a good conference. I think we can be successful in a couple years.”

" Realmente me gustó el Campus y su gente, jugadores y entrenadores. Me siento muy bien sobre eso" dijo Cruz . " Es un buen lugar  en dónde voy a jugar y una buena Conferencia. Creo que podemos tener éxito en un par de años"

Wyoming definitely wanted Cruz to become a Cowboy as the head and assistant coach spent many days and nights in Cougar Palace watching him put up numbers. Cruz also was entertaining interest from the University of Montana, California-Riverside and Coastal Carolina.

Wyoming definitivamente quería ver a Cruz convertido en un Cowboy , ya que el entrenador y su asistente pasaron varios dias y noches en el Palacio del Cougar , viéndolo subir sus números. Cruz también estaba en la mira de la Universidad de Montana , de California-Riverside y de Coastal Carolina. 

“The head and assistant coach was watching me all the time. They really wanted me,” Cruz said. “Going to Wyoming is closer to home and it is the highest level to play in. I just feel good about it and hope everything will work out.”

" El entrenador principal y su asistente estuvieron observándome todo el tiempo, deveras me buscaban" dijo Cruz. " Ir a Wyoming es estar cerca de casa y es un nivel mas alto de juego . Me siento bien por eso y espero que todo funcione bien" .  

WNCC head coach Russ Beck said Wyoming is a perfect fit for Cruz.

Russ Beck , entrenador de WNCC dijo que Wyoming es una una excelente opción para Cruz.

“Paco can play at a lot of different levels and I do like the way Wyoming went about recruiting him. They identified a need they have in finding someone for the wing position that can shoot and understands how to play. Wyoming has a relative young team and they have a lot of potential, and adding another shooter like Paco helps their team step to a new level. I think it is a good opportunity for him.

"Paco puede jugar en muchos niveles diferentes y me gusta la forma que Wyoming manejó su reclutamiento. 

Ellos identificaron una necesidad que tienen, encontrar  a alguien para la posición de Ala que pueda tirar y entender como jugar. Wyoming es un equipo relativamente joven y tiene mucho potencial , agregando otro tirador como Paco les ayuda a ir a un nuevo nivel . Creo que es una buena oportunidad para él."

“The Mountain West is a very competitive conference with the likes of UNLV, BYU and New Mexico, all teams that have been ranked at some part of the year, and they will get three teams into the NCAA tournament.

" La Mountain West es una Conferencia muy competitiva con equipos como UNLV, BYU y Nuevo Mexico, todos son equipos rankeados en alguna época del año y tendrán tres conjuntos en el torneo de la NCAA". 

“I think the closeness was a big part of his decision. He is close to his high school coach and close to Denver where he played high school basketball,” Beck said. “He is also close to Scottsbluff and the people he knows here. All of us can enjoy his two year career at Wyoming.”

" Creo que la cercanía fué una parte importante de su decisión. Estará cerca de su High School , de Denver y de su entrenador de allí, donde el jugó en High School " dijo Beck. " También cerca de Scottsbluff y la gente que conoce aqui.  Todos nosotros disfrutaremos sus 2 años de carrera en Wyoming ".

 As a freshman, Cruz had 41 3-pointers and 460 points, while being named the college’s male most valuable athlete.En su primer año , Cruz fué nombrado el Atleta mas Valioso del Colegio , gracias  a sus 41 canastas de 3 puntos y 460 puntos totales. Esta temporada esta promediando 20.3 ppj con 63 canastas de 3 puntos . También se convirtió en el jugador no. 10 de la historia de la escuela en anotar mas de 40 puntos en un juego.

For his 2-year career at WNCC, Cruz has made 104 3-pointers and scored 967 points. Cruz needs just 31 points to become only the 12^th player in school history to finish with over 1,000 points for his career. Last player to achieve that goal was Tommie King back in 1998-2000, when he scored 1,086 points. King went on to play at Iowa State University.

En sus 2 años de carrera en WNCC, Cruz ha hecho 104 tiros de tres y anotado 967 puntos. Cruz necesita solo 31 puntos para llegar a ser el jugador no. 12 en la historia de la escuela en terminar sobre 1000 puntos en su carrera. El último jugador en conseguir esta meta fué Tommie King en 1998-2000, cuando anotó 1086 puntos. King fué después a jugar a Iowa State University.   

Cruz is also pulling down 5.7 rebounds a game and shooting 46.9 percent from the field and 77.6 from the charity stripe. Cruz is hitting on 44.4 percent of his 3-point shots (63 of 142).

Cruz said that he will be playing a shooting guard when he attends the Wyoming. He added that his game improved a lot under Beck.

Cruz también ha bajado 5.7 rebotes por juego y tira para un 46.9 % desde el campo y 77.6 % desde el tiro libre. Está tirando para un 44.4 % desde la linea de tres puntos ( 63 de 142).

Cruz dice que jugará Guardia Tirador cuando esté en Wyoming , agregó que su juego mejoró mucho con el entrenador Beck.
